Want or Need: CELL PHONE

In an ever-growing materialistic society, it's becoming more difficult to distinguish the difference between what we really want and what we really need. It's time for you to weigh in on this discussion. It's real simple...is it a want or a need?

CELL PHONE

WANT or NEED?

Ooo... that's a hard one. Cell phone - need. All the bells and whistles - want.

I think that a basic cell phone is a need. Many families are doing away with home phone lines so they need a way of communicating with the outside world.

I think the want comes into play when you want something like an iPhone or a Blackberry. You don't need to have a phone that allows to to download an app to read the NY Times or to tell you what time it is in Sri Lanka.

as a frequent loser/victim of thievery with cell phones (i've had 4 razors, 6 centros, and 3 palm treo pros over the last 3 1/2 years - that's an average of almost 1 every 3 months), i have to say that the week i spend waiting for my new phone to come in the mail are the most quiet and refreshing seven days of my life! and i still get my work done & facebook read everyday. maybe a 'necessary evil' that falls into both categories??

I say want, purely because I know people (very, very few) who have pretty stressful jobs and families and they function fine without cell phones.

I believe society is quick to adjust to the changes that make life easier, and it becomes easy to depend on things like cellphones to the point that a person can become convinced that they can't do without it. It would be a want and not a need. A person can adjust to not having one.

for me.. it's a need for sure.. I don't have a phone in my office, and most days, as a youth pastor, I'm not in my office.. I'm at the skate park, or somewhere else with the kiddos.. so when people need to get a hold of me, a cellphone is necessary.

Now.. the phone I have.. iPhone 4.. totally a want.. though it is very useful, not just for the fun stuff.. but its been great for keeping me on task and schedule.. most of the time

I also want to say "want". I still remember how cool it was to have a pager except when you didn't have a quarter to call the number. Other countries do find without the cell phone by there side.

Ivy, once you venture into the poverty of other countries, perspective changes for sure.

Want. Cell phones are not a necessity.
